The announcement came late Tuesday that KIM JONES is set to leave his role as artistic director of LOUIS VUITTON men's. From a design standpoint, Jones has done a fantastic job at the label, successfully combining luxury label gear with today's all-powerful ethos of street and sport. Designer departures have come to feel routine. NYT coverage of Jones's departure notes that he's the "fifth major designer to leave a job in six weeks." As gratifying as it is to track designers like player trades or a favorite draft pick, it can sometimes feel like it detracts from the bigger picture—the clothes, the craft, the wider teams involved in bringing every collection to stores and the runway. There's been plenty of speculation about Jones's next move. Will he go to BURBERRY or VERSACE? Who will pick up the LV baton after Jones? Will fashion labels always be hovering on the brink of creative overhaul? This sums it up pretty well...
